  • Review and complete documentation related to daily performance.
  • Assist shop and contract personnel with work at assigned buildings.
  • Observe safety regulations and MOSH/OSHA standards at all times.

The Prince George’s County Office of Central Services is currently seeking qualified applicants to fill a Stationary Engineer I/II, (Building Engineer 1A) grade A-14/15 position, in the Facilities Operation and Management Division. This position may work in various County facilities, including the correctional facility. This is an essential position.

About the Position

This is a skilled entry to full-performance level mechanical and manual work in the inspection maintenance, repair, and operation of environmental systems in assigned County owned and leased buildings. The selected candidate will regularly inspect the heating, cooling, and ventilating systems making necessary adjustments and repairs for the proper functioning of the system. Work is performed under the general supervision of a Facilities Maintenance Supervisor of Facilities Manager.

Upon the satisfactory completion of the probationary period and attainment of a Second (2nd) Class Stationary Engineer License, the selected candidate may be promoted to the full performance II level of the Building Engineer class series.

The Office of Central Services is a multifaceted agency of the Prince George’s County Government providing government-wide, mission critical support services in the areas of facilities operations and management, building design & construction, real estate services, fleet management, and general services.   • Plans, schedules, and leads subordinates in the maintaining and performing preventive maintenance on mechanical and non-mechanical systems.
  • Operate building environmental systems, i.e., heating/cooling/ventilation systems, plumbing, fixtures, electrical systems, and non-mechanical items.
  • Review and complete documentation associated with daily performance.
  • Assist shop and contract personnel with performing work at assigned buildings.
  • Observes all administrative rules and regulations, safety practices and measures, and complies with security regulations at all times.
  • Maintains knowledge of safety rules and regulations in trade areas. Consistently observes good safety practices in accordance with County, Maryland Occupational Safety and Health (MOSH), and Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) standards.
  • Demonstrates good knowledge of latest equipment and replacement parts.
  • Willingly and cooperatively performs tasks and duties assigned which may not specifically listed in position description but are within the general category and responsibility level typically associated with the employee’s class of work.
Minimum Qualifications

Candidates must meet all minimum qualifications listed below to be eligible for additional consideration:

  • High School Diploma or G.E.D Certificate.

  • Six (6) months of the maintenance, repair, installation of heating, cooling, and ventilation systems.

  • Must possess and maintain a Third (3rd) Class Stationary Engineer’s License as established by the Maryland Department of Licensing and Regulation, Board of Examining Engineers.

  • Must possess and maintain a valid Class C driver’s license with no more than six (6) points.

An equivalent combination of education, experience and training which provides the required knowledge, skills and abilities may be considered.

Preferred Qualifications

Highly qualified candidates may also demonstrate the preferred qualifications listed below:

  • Comprehensive knowledge and experience of the assembly, adjustment, repair and installation of heating/cooling/ventilating systems.
  • Ability to understand, operate, and troubleshoot Building Automated Systems (B.A.S.), Energy Management Systems (E.M.S) and other computer-based control and monitoring systems in buildings.
  • Ability to identify problems in the system to ensure early detection of breakdowns.

  • Must possess and maintain a valid Class C driver’s license.
  • Must be willing to respond to emergency service calls on a 24-hour basis.
  • Meet all training and performance standards and demonstrate proficiency as required by the agency.
  • Wear and use agency protective apparel and equipment in the performance of their assigned duties.
  • Successfully pass preemployment checks which may include reference checks, background investigations, and drug screenings.
  • Be willing and able to serve as an essential employee. This is an essential position. Essential employees are expected to report during standard or non-standard hours as operations necessitate, or during emergencies. Essential employees are expected to report or remain at work when other County employees are granted Administrative Leave.
