Job summary

The North Carolina Department of Natural and Cultural Resources (DNCR) Division of Parks and Recreation is seeking a State Parks Planner to develop master plans, general management plans, and concept plans for park units. This role supports planning the future of the NC State Parks system with an emphasis on visitor use, staff operations, and preservation of natural resources.

You will coordinate with multiple programs, supervise staff and contracted planners, and communicate planning decisions

Qualifications

• Master’s degree in planning or public administration with planning coursework.
• Two years planning experience with one year in a lead/supervisory role.
• Experience in park planning and natural resource management preferred.
• Experience with GIS and/or AutoCAD preferred.

Responsibilities

• Preparing and updating general management plans.
• Preparing and updating master plans, conceptual plans and site plans for new and existing units.
• Supervise/coordinate contracted planning services for new and existing units.
• Coordinating with other programs throughout the Division and with external interested parties on park plans.
• Conducting comprehensive, long-range planning for the State Parks System, including preparation of the Systemwide Plan.
• Developing master plans, general management plans, concept plans, graphically conveying ideas and decisions needed to improve or expand park facilities for visitor use, staff operations and preservation of natural resources.
• Supervise temporary and permanent employees, volunteers, interns and consultants.
• Assist the Park Planning Program Manager in the preparation of other special planning projects, as needed.
