Job summary

The North Carolina Department of Natural and Cultural Resources (DNCR) is seeking a State Parks Planner to develop master plans, general management plans and concept plans for state parks, guiding facilities, visitor use and resource preservation. The role involves coordinating with internal programs and external stakeholders.

The position is eligible for hybrid telework, with a typical Monday–Friday schedule in Raleigh, NC.

Qualifications

• Demonstrated experience with community planning, landscape architecture, civil engineering or natural resource-based planning.
• Experience in environmental protection, natural resource management, recreation land use or public park management.
• Experience using GIS and/or AutoCAD.
• Ability to develop graphic presentation materials and planning concepts.

• Coordinate contracted planning services for new and existing units.

Description of Work

Do you enjoy our state parks and want to be a part of planning the future of the North Carolina State Park system? The NC State Parks is seeking a State Parks Planner to join the planning program team and develop master plans, general management plans, concept plans, graphically conveying ideas and decisions needed to improve or expand park facilities for visitor use, staff operations and preservation of natural resources.

Key responsibilities include but are not limited to:

• Preparing and updating general management plans.
• Preparing and updating master plans, conceptual plans and site plans for new and existing units.
• Supervise/coordinate contracted planning services for new and existing units.
• Coordinating with other programs throughout the Division and with external interested parties on park plans.
• Conducting comprehensive, long-range planning for the State Parks System, including preparation of the Systemwide Plan.
• Developing master plans, general management plans, concept plans, graphically conveying ideas and decisions needed to improve or expand park facilities for visitor use, staff operations and preservation of natural resources.
• Supervise temporary and permanent employees, volunteers, interns and consultants.
• Assist the Park Planning Program Manager in the preparation of other special planning projects, as needed.

Recruitment Range of $50,088 - $63,000

Applicants who possess the following are preferred:

• Demonstrated experience of the principles and practices of community planning, landscape architecture, civil engineering and/or natural resource-based management/planning.
• Demonstrated experience utilizing the principles and practices related to environmental protection, natural resource management, recreational land use, and/or public park management.
• Demonstrated experience utilizing Geographic Information Systems (GIS) and/or AutoCAD.
• Demonstrated experience developing graphic presentation materials and/or planning level design concepts.

Position/Physical Requirements:

• Typical work schedule is Monday to Friday, 8:00am to 5:00pm; Must be available to work after hours, weekends, and holidays when necessary.
• Must have a valid driver's license issued from within the United States or be able to obtain one within 90 days of employment.
• Must be able to exert up to 50 pounds of force occasionally, and/or up to 20 pounds of force frequently, and/or up to 10 pounds of force constantly to move objects with or without reasonable accommodation.
