Job summary

Rivian is seeking a Staff Technical Writer in Plymouth, MI to own the service documentation strategy for repair procedures, service bulletins, and time standards across Rivian’s vehicle programs. You will coordinate with Service Engineering, Diagnostics, and Quality teams to resolve complex documentation challenges and improve technician efficiency.

You will mentor other writers, establish authoring standards, and partner with the Illustration team to deliver clear, accurate, and scalable

Qualifications

• Bachelor's degree in Technical Communications, Engineering, Automotive Technology, or a related technical field.
• 5+ years of experience in technical writing, service documentation, or technical publications, ideally within automotive, heavy equipment, or another complex mechanical/electrical industry.
• Translate complex, ambiguous engineering information into clear, accurate, actionable content for a skilled trade audience.
• Extensive experience developing, maintaining, and setting standards for service manuals, repair procedures, labor standards, or parts catalogs.
• Advanced comfort reviewing 3D CAD models, engineering drawings, BOMs to support procedure development.
• Strong project management skills with complex, concurrent documentation deliveries.
• Excellent written communication and ability to convey technical trade-offs to stakeholders.
• Proven ability to build relationships across matrixed teams and influence outcomes.
• Mentoring or leading other technical writers.

Responsibilities

• Own the technical content strategy for service manuals, repair procedures, and labor code entries.
• Lead creation and publication of technical service bulletins, field actions, campaigns, and recall documentation.
• Define and maintain labor time standards and time-study practices.
• Establish consistent naming conventions and classifications for service parts and procedures.
• Set validation standards and quality gates for service procedures before release.
• Ensure corrections are traceable and communicated to stakeholders.
• Coordinate with CAD/Illustration teams for graphics and diagrams.
• Manage complex documentation across vehicle programs using Jira.
• Identify content gaps from field feedback and drive proactive revisions.
• Champion structured content and AI-assisted authoring tools.
• Mentor writers and participate in design/change reviews.
• Represent Documentation in cross-functional reviews for downstream impact.
• Improve the documentation lifecycle to reduce delays while maintaining quality.
