Job summary

Gusto seeks a Staff Software Engineer for the Tax Accounts team to simplify tax data flows for thousands of customers. You will own backend APIs, data models, and frontend touchpoints across a complex compliance domain, while ensuring accuracy and reliability at scale.

You’ll collaborate with Product, Design, Tax Operations, and a PEO team to turn customer pain into scalable solutions, mentor engineers, and deliver high-impact features that customers genuinely love.

Qualifications

• 8+ years software development experience
• Staff-level technical leadership
• Experience owning multi-quarter projects
• Strong ownership of reliability, performance, and correctness
• Designing data models and APIs for complex domains
• Experience leveraging AI tools to accelerate development
• Mentoring engineers to maximize impact
• Clear communication with cross-functional teams

Responsibilities

• Design, build, and test the systems behind employer and employee tax accounts: registrations, authorizations, filings, and setup across jurisdictions
• Build automation to access tax agencies and maintain data accuracy across accounts
• Model complex compliance rules into maintainable systems with emphasis on reliability
• Partner with Product, Design, Tax Operations, and PEO to turn customer pain into solutions and launch
• Mentor engineers and tackle hard problems at scale
• Create products that customers love
