Job summary

Gusto is hiring seasoned engineers to join teams working on core platform capabilities, enhancing scalability and extensibility of the Tax platform. You will influence feature specs, evolve existing systems toward desired states, and maintain code powering core experiences in a highly collaborative environment.

We’re seeking experts with 10+ years of experience, strong distributed systems knowledge, and ability to guide multiple teams on large-scale projects.

Qualifications

• 10+ years of experience in software engineering.
• Experience designing and developing robust distributed systems.
• Experience guiding multiple teams on scaling, refactoring, and optimizing legacy products.
• Experience architecting, building, and testing large-scale production level code.
• Familiar with current AI tools (LLMs, Agents) and embedding AI in development workflows.

Responsibilities

• Design, build, and test the platform that supports tax compliance for millions of people.
• Help scale one of the largest Ruby/Rails and TypeScript/React applications.
• Collaborate with cross-functional teams to solve complex problems.
• Improve developer productivity with reusable services, tools, and APIs.
• Build guardrails to safely leverage AI in tax concepts with compliance and reliability.
• Mentor engineers and share knowledge to uplift team capabilities.
• Define and pursue the technical strategy and roadmap for your domain.
• Identify long-term investments to improve foundational systems and architecture.
• Lead improvements to incident response and reliability processes.
