Job summary

Compass is seeking a Staff Software Engineer in the Search & Listings organization to build scalable search infrastructure and listing pipelines, leading a team to deliver high-impact features for agents and buyers.

You will design APIs, drive decoupled systems, and mentor engineers, leveraging AI, data pipelines, and telemetry to improve discovery and inventory. Join a team with visibility and challenging projects as Compass grows.

Qualifications

• 10+ years of experience developing high-performance software in Java or Go.
• Experience with gRPC/Thrift and server-to-server communication protocols, Kafka.
• 5+ years using AWS/cloud technologies.
• A track record as a technical leader with cross-team impact.
• Strong written and verbal English communication.

Responsibilities

• Provide strategic direction and ownership of platform architecture and data ingestion to deliver a scalable search experience.
• Independently define and lead delivery of complex technical projects across the entire stack.
• Champion operational excellence by defining reliability KPIs and improving service health and reducing technical debt.
• Adopt modern software patterns, including AI integration and data pipelines.
• Operate in a scalable engineering culture with AI-assisted workflows and automated CI/CD/testing/monitoring.
• Inspire, recruit, and mentor engineers.
