Job summary

Compass is hiring a Staff Software Engineer in the Search & Listings organization to design and build scalable search infrastructure, listing pipelines, enrichment services, and feed integrations for a consumer-first real estate discovery experience.

You will lead a team, define APIs, and drive high-impact projects across the stack while collaborating with product and business decisions. Strong leadership, communication, and cloud experience are essential for this role.

Qualifications

• BS in Computer Science, Software Engineering or equivalent practical experience.
• 10+ years of experience developing comprehensive, well-tested software applications in languages such as Java or Go and technology such as gRPC, Thrift, and other server-to-server communication protocols, Kafka and event-driven systems.
• 5+ years using AWS / cloud technologies.
• Technical leadership with cross-team impact.
• Experience with Scrum/Agile development methodologies
• Excellent verbal and written English communication skills

Responsibilities

• Provide strategic direction and ownership of platform architecture, data ingestion and normalization, to deliver an industry leading search experience at scale.
• Independently define and lead the delivery of complex technical projects across the entire stack.
• Champion a culture of operational excellence by defining reliability KPIs, establishing accountability for service health, and leading architectural improvements that proactively reduce technical debt, manual toil, and infrastructure costs.
• Adopt and operationalize modern software patterns, including integrating AI, data pipelines, and telemetry systems to automate workflows
• Operate in a scalable engineering culture that leverages AI assisted workflows, decoupled systems, and automated CI/CD/testing/monitoring.
• Inspire, recruit, and mentor fellow engineers.
