Job summary

Compass is seeking a Staff Software Engineer for the Search & Listings organization. You will lead the design and development of search infrastructure, listing pipelines, enrichment services, and feed integrations to power a premier real estate discovery experience.

You will drive APIs, mentor engineers, and shape engineering practices to ensure fault-tolerant, scalable, and well-tested systems. This role emphasizes collaboration with product and business teams to deliver high-impact outcomes.

Qualifications

• BS in Computer Science, Software Engineering or equivalent practical experience.
• 10+ years of experience developing comprehensive, well-tested, high-performance software in Java or Go and technologies such as gRPC, Thrift, and Kafka.
• 5+ years using AWS/cloud technologies.
• Technical leader with cross-team impact.
• Experience with Scrum/Agile methodologies.
• Excellent verbal and written English communication.

Responsibilities

• Provide strategic direction and ownership of platform architecture, data ingestion and normalization, to deliver an industry leading search experience at scale.
• Independently define and lead the delivery of complex technical projects across the entire stack.
• Champion a culture of operational excellence by defining reliability KPIs and improving service health and reducing technical debt.
• Adopt modern software patterns, including AI, data pipelines, and telemetry to automate workflows.
• Operate in a scalable engineering culture with AI-assisted workflows, decoupled systems, and automated CI/CD/testing/monitoring.
• Inspire, recruit, and mentor fellow engineers.
• Join a team with high visibility and challenging projects ahead.
