Job summary

Code for America is seeking a Staff Software Engineer to shape the technical direction of an engineering team delivering government services.

You will drive reliable software delivery, mentor engineers, and own architecture decisions while collaborating with product and cross-functional partners. This role is fully remote within the United States with up to 10% travel, and it emphasizes openness, fairness, and impact.

Qualifications

• 7+ years of software engineering experience with architecture, data modeling, web tech and API design.
• Experience across languages, frameworks, and tech stacks, or ability to ramp quickly.
• Experience using AI coding tools and modeling their use responsibly.
• Familiarity with Agile software development (Scrum, XP, TDD, or BDD).
• Demonstrated technical leadership: setting direction and decision-making.
• Experience with cloud infrastructure and IaC tooling, collaboration, and mentorship.

Responsibilities

• Lead technical delivery: craft features, write tests, monitor service quality.
• Own architecture and data-modeling decisions for major production systems.
• Collaborate with PMs and cross-functional peers; mentor teammates.
• Contribute to design, implementation, code review, and AI-assisted development.
• Help scale delivery and promote strong engineering practices.
