Job summary

Code for America is seeking a Staff Data Engineer to lead data infrastructure across government services. You will design and operate data pipelines, ensure data quality, and collaborate with data scientists, engineers, and product teams to drive measurable outcomes.

You will mentor teammates, promote data governance, and contribute to best practices while working remotely within the United States.

Qualifications

• 7+ years of data engineering or related field.
• Expert-level SQL and experience with Python and R.
• Experience with Postgres and cloud data warehousing (BigQuery/Snowflake).
• Experience using data orchestration and transformation tools (Dagster, dbt).
• Proficient with BI tools (Metabase/Tableau/PowerBI/Looker) and notebook access (Hex).
• Strong collaboration, communication, and governance skills.
• Ability to lead and mentor data teams and align with product goals.

Responsibilities

• Lead data engineering projects and guide teams to delivery.
• Create data pipelines, data transfers, and cloud infrastructure.
• Collaborate with Data Scientists, Software Engineers and Product Managers.
• Implement data transformation, integration and validation processes.
• Partner with DevOps to apply deployment standards and monitoring.
• Mentor engineers and data scientists on best practices.
• Document data engineering standards and share learnings.
