Ad Hoc LLC in the United States is seeking a Staff Software Engineer to join the Veterans Enrollment System modernization effort for the VA. You will lead backend services in a microservices stack, bridging modern and legacy components to keep systems reliable while delivering new features.

This senior role emphasizes technical ownership, mentoring, and clear communication with partners and stakeholders, with remote-friendly programs and enterprise-scale government work.

Qualifications

• Bachelor's degree and 10+ years of software development experience.
• 8+ years of hands-on Java development experience.
• 5+ years with Spring Framework / Spring Boot.
• 5+ years developing REST APIs in a microservices stack.
• Experience in Agile/Scrum environments and Git-based workflows.

Responsibilities

• Design, develop, and maintain backend services in a microservices architecture using Java 17+, Spring Boot, JPA/Hibernate, and REST APIs.
• Design and implement REST and SOAP-based services; integrate modernized platform with existing systems.
• Sustain legacy Java platform using Oracle, Spring Framework, Struts, JSP, EJB, JMS, WebLogic, Hibernate.
• Troubleshoot defects across modern and legacy systems; optimize data access and SQL patterns.
• Collaborate with architects on modernization strategies and roadmaps; mentor junior engineers.
• Participate in Agile ceremonies; contribute to automated testing, CI/CD, and deployments.
