Job summary

EVgo seeks a Staff Engineer, Project Development to design and manage the deployment of fast-charging infrastructure from feasibility to construction. You’ll balance constructability, cost, and customer experience while leading cross-functional design initiatives.

With 8+ years of related experience and a PE/EIT plus PMP or equivalent, you’ll mentor junior engineers and coordinate with vendors, jurisdictions, utilities, and EVgo teams to deliver multiple projects on schedule.

Position Summary

The Staff Engineer, Project Development designs and manages the deployment of EVgo fast-charging infrastructure projects from feasibility through permitting and construction. Combining electrical engineering expertise with project management capabilities, this role delivers optimally designed charging stations across a concurrent portfolio — balancing constructability, regulatory compliance, cost efficiency, and customer experience. The Staff Engineer drives process improvements, pilots novel site archetypes and technologies, and serves as the technical lead for cross-functional design initiatives across EVgo's broader project deployment program.

Responsibilities

Engineering Deliverables & Site Design:

• Act as Subject Matter Expert (SME) for engineering and site design during all phases of feasibility, design, and construction of EVgo sites.
• Collaborate with internal teams and external partners to develop and deliver comprehensive engineering deliverables, including conceptual layouts, cost estimates, civil, electrical, and structural design packages, plus any additional site-specific design deliverables.
• Produce scope of work and track project deadlines and deliverables from engineering partners, including site surveys, preliminary and permit-package engineering.
• Ensure all design activities maintain excellent quality control and full code compliance from initial proposal through detailed engineering.

Permitting & Regulatory Coordination

• In coordination with permitting staff, meet with zoning and permitting personnel to understand jurisdictional approval requirements and identify opportunities for timeline reduction.
• Represent EVgo as the design subject matter expert at public meetings and track status of all required approvals.
• Ensure projects adhere to internal and external stakeholder standards with appropriate prioritization of requirements.
• Be able to perform permitting activities for standard sites with little to no assistance on an ad-hoc basis.

Project Management & Reporting

• Track and report on productivity metrics for work-in-progress to meet business expectations and deliverable commitments.
• Manage a concurrent portfolio of projects from initial technical site evaluation through permitting and construction management.
• Provide or facilitate design support to general contractors during all phases of construction.

Stakeholder Relationships & Team Development

• Establish and maintain relationships with key stakeholders including vendors, contractors, jurisdictions, regulatory agencies, utilities, partners, and internal EVgo teams.
• Serve as a cross-functional technical resource for programmatic design initiatives across Site Development, Grid Integration, and Supply Chain teams.
• Provide technical mentorship and guidance to junior engineers; share expertise in engineering standards, permitting processes, and design best practices.
• Perform other duties and special projects as assigned to support team and organizational objectives.

Qualifications

• Typically requires a minimum of 8 years of related experience with a Bachelor’s degree; or 6 years and a Master’s degree; or a PhD with 3 years of experience; or equivalent experience.

Desired Skills

• Bachelor's degree in Electrical Engineering, Civil Engineering, Construction Management, or a related field.
• Background in utilities, renewables (commercial solar, energy storage), or high-voltage engineering.
• Professional Engineer (PE) license or EIT designation.
• PMP certification or equivalent project management experience.
• Working knowledge of Salesforce, Sitetracker, or equivalent enterprise CRM systems.
• Working knowledge of electrical design drawings, electrical equipment, power integration, and utility design processes.
• Advanced knowledge of site development procedures including regulatory and permitting processes.
• Proficiency in reading, interpreting, and redlining zoning and construction drawings.
• Strong grasp of construction cost implications with ability to make cost-efficiency recommendations.
• Proven track record managing and delivering multiple simultaneous projects on or ahead of schedule while maintaining quality standards.
• Demonstrated ability to build relationships and communicate effectively with property owners, jurisdictions, contractors, and other stakeholders.
• Occasional travel may be required for team, permitting, or site coordination meetings.
