Job summary

EVgo seeks an experienced Staff Electrical Engineer to own hardware design for major subsystems in EV charging hardware. You will lead controller and PCB development, define interfaces, manage BOMs, and work with systems, mechanical, test, and software teams to ensure performance, reliability, and compliance across projects.

You will mentor engineers, collaborate on DFMEA, and drive design maturity from prototype to production, while navigating with suppliers and global partners as part of

Qualifications

  • Typically requires a minimum of 8 years of related experience with a Bachelor’s degree; or 6 years and a Master’s degree; or a PhD with 3 years of experience; or equivalent experience
  • Experience with high-voltage power electronics is desirable
  • Ability to mentor engineers and lead cross-functional design reviews

Position Summary

The Staff Electrical Engineer owns hardware design and leads development for major electrical subsystems within EVgo's EV charging hardware, exercising independent judgment on complex design issues that span multiple boards and interfaces. This role owns critical hardware design areas end to end and partners with systems, mechanical, test and software/firmware teams to ensure charging hardware meets EVgo's performance, reliability, and compliance standards.

Responsibilities

Hardware Design & Development

  • Own hardware design and lead development of major controller and related PCB designs within EVgo's charging systems.
  • Design and document electrical interfaces between major hardware subsystems, such as power cabinets and dispensers.
  • Own internal power cabinet electrical design and wire harness architecture.
  • Maintain the bill of materials, source components, and release wiring schematics with version control across owned designs.
  • Lead hands-on design and validation of prototype hardware, ensuring design maturity through characterization and debugging.
  • Develop and technically manage suppliers, including board houses.
  • Define and support board-level end-of-line (EOL) procedures and test equipment.
  • Participate in design and project reviews with suppliers, including in-person engagement with Asia-based partners.

Cross-Functional Collaboration & Technical Leadership

  • Work cross-functionally with systems, software and firmware teams to create requirements.
  • Collaborate on system-level design failure mode and effects analysis (DFMEA) with the systems lead and technical subject matter experts.

Team Development & Knowledge Sharing

  • Mentor Associate, Electrical Engineer, and Sr Electrical Engineer team members on design practices and technical problem-solving.
  • Share design standards and lessons learned across the Electrical Engineering team to raise overall design quality.
  • Perform other duties and special projects as assigned to support team and organizational objectives.

Qualifications

  • Typically requires a minimum of 8 years of related experience with a Bachelor’s degree; or 6 years and a Master’s degree; or a PhD with 3 years of experience; or equivalent experience

Desired Skills

  • Master's degree in Electrical Engineering or a related field.
  • Familiarity with embedded Linux devices.
  • Knowledge of EV protocols such as CCS, J1772, DIN 70121, and ISO 15118.
  • Demonstrated hardware design experience with analog, digital, and mixed-signal interfaces.
  • Experience with schematic design tools, PCB layout, FPGA development systems and tools, and simulation tools (PSpice, MATLAB, etc.).
  • Experience with communication protocols including SPI, I2C, CAN, Modbus, Ethernet, and PLC.
  • Working knowledge of high-voltage systems and power electronics.
  • Proficiency with test and measurement tools (oscilloscope, logic analyzer, spectrum analyzer).
  • Occasional domestic and international travel may be required, including for supplier design and project reviews.
