Job summary

HighLevel, a remote-first AI-powered business operating system, is seeking a Staff Engineer – Backend to design, build and evolve backend systems powering our CRM platform. You will influence architecture across teams, tackle high-volume APIs, and drive scalable, observable infrastructure at scale.

You will work hands-on with engineers to optimize data models, queues, and service boundaries while mentoring others and maintaining high engineering standards across the organization.

Qualifications

• 8+ years of software engineering experience with backend systems at scale.
• Proficiency in Node.js/TypeScript, Go, Java, or similar.
• Strong distributed systems and microservice knowledge.
• API design and service-to-service communication expertise.
• Relational and NoSQL database knowledge.
• Experience with large datasets and high request volumes.
• Concurrency, asynchronous processing, queues and event-driven architectures.
• Caching and distributed caching expertise.
• Data indexing, transactions and data consistency.
• Retries, idempotency, timeouts, rate limiting and recovery.
• Scalability, availability, consistency and performance trade-offs.
• Diagnosing production issues with metrics, logs, tracing.
• Strong system design and architectural decision-making.
• Ability to lead technically complex initiatives.

Responsibilities

• Design and evolve scalable backend systems and services.
• Lead architecture for cross-team backend initiatives.
• Design APIs, data models, event-driven workflows.
• Build systems for high-throughput requests and large datasets.
• Improve API latency, throughput and scalability.
• Lead investigations into production incidents and corrective actions.
• Define reliability, scalability, testing, security standards.
• Mentor engineers and contribute hands-on code.
