Job summary

Affirm is a remote-first company reinventing credit with a focus on trustworthy data platforms. We manage relational and key-value databases at scale, including MySQL, DynamoDB, and distributed SQL.

As a Staff Software Engineer on the Online Storage team, you will set the technical roadmap, drive scalable datastore solutions, and collaborate with product, infra, and SRE to deliver high-performance data services across the business.

Qualifications

• 8+ years designing, developing and launching backend systems at scale.
• 5+ years hands-on database expertise with relational/distributed SQL.
• Strong written and verbal communication for cross-functional collaboration.

Responsibilities

• Set technical strategy for the team on a year-long horizon.
• Collaborate with product, infra, and SRE to align roadmaps.
• Design and build scalable datastore components for relational and key-value stores.
• Develop control planes for hundreds of databases, migrations, DR, sharding, and performance tuning.
• Lead architecture discussions and advocate robust operational processes.
• Ensure monitoring, on-call readiness, runbooks and incident response.
• Foster quality and ownership through code reviews and knowledge sharing.
• Mentor engineers and help grow team talent.
