Coinbase is hiring a Staff Software Engineer for the Payments team. You will own the multi-year technical strategy and architecture for the Payments platform, building fault-tolerant distributed systems and governing high-volume transaction flows globally.

You will lead cross-functional collaborations to balance speed, safety, and regulatory needs. You will mentor engineers, drive standards, and shape the technical direction across teams, ensuring scalable, reliable services as Coinbase expands

Qualifications

• 8+ years in software engineering, with payments or high-volume systems.
• Experience architecting fault-tolerant distributed systems.
• Led platform-building efforts across services (shared frameworks, unified APIs, multi-tenant architectures).
• Proven production reliability ownership and incident response across multiple teams.
• Ability to influence technical direction without direct authority.
• Responsible use of generative AI with human oversight to improve workflows.

Responsibilities

• Own multi-year technical strategy and architecture for the Payments platform.
• Build and evolve distributed systems for high-volume payment traffic with SLOs.
• Drive engineering quality with paved roads, shared frameworks, and coding standards.
• Partner with Product, Risk, Compliance, and Operations to translate requirements into technical solutions.
• Lead scaling and reliability initiatives and drive improvements from postmortems.
• Mentor engineers and provide architectural guidance across the team.
