Job summary

Wheel is seeking a Staff Software Engineer to own the technical direction of AI-native agent systems. You will lead architecture, platform abstractions, and production-grade safety in a regulated environment, delivering measurable capabilities that scale telehealth infrastructure.

This hands-on role requires deep system thinking, collaboration with product and operations, and mentoring engineers to raise the bar across teams.

Qualifications

• Staff-level engineer sets technical direction for AI-native systems.
• Owns production AI agents from design to deployment.
• Experience operating in regulated environments with privacy/compliance constraints.
• Leads squads or cross-functional initiatives and ships measurable outcomes.

Responsibilities

• Own the technical direction for AI-native domain: agent architecture, platform abstractions, or evaluation infrastructure.
• Act as tech lead for a squad or cross-team initiative, framing problems, sequencing delivery, removing blockers, and steering to outcome.
• Write and review design docs; document load-bearing architectural decisions.
• Establish clear technical ownership and governance to avoid stalled reviews.
• Design and build production AI agents including retrieval, orchestration, tool invocation, and observability.
• Set standards for production-ready agents: testability, rollback safety, cost ceilings, failure modes, human-in-the-loop boundaries.
• Hands-on execution; expect to contribute code in addition to leadership.
• Build foundations to enable safe, scalable AI across services with reusable patterns and guardrails.
• Partner with product, operations, and business leaders to define worthwhile use cases and drive adoption.
• Define evaluation metrics and plans for agent accuracy, latency, safety and cost-effectiveness.
