Wheel is seeking a Staff Software Engineer to lead AI-native systems (agent architecture, platform abstractions, and evaluation guardrails) in a remote US environment. You will own the technical direction, decompose ambiguous problems, and guide engineers to shipped, measurable outcomes.

This is a hands-on role requiring 8+ years building production software with full-stack depth in TypeScript/Node.js and Python, strong cloud-native practices, on-call ownership, and the ability to work with

Qualifications

8+ years building and operating production software.
Full-stack depth across a TypeScript/Node.js backend and a second language (Python preferred).
Technical leadership as an individual contributor; own domains and drive cross-team outcomes.
Hands-on experience designing and deploying agentic systems in production.
Experience with CI/CD, observability, and cloud-native engineering.

Responsibilities

Own the technical direction for a significant AI-native domain: agent architecture, platform abstractions, or evaluation/guardrail infrastructure.
Act as tech lead for a squad or cross-team initiative; decompose problems and sequence delivery.
Write and review design docs; establish clear ownership and decisions.
Mentor engineers and craft reusable patterns, docs, and best practices.
