Job summary

Baton Rouge General Medical Center is seeking a detail-oriented medical coder with at least 10 years of general coding experience. AAPC certification is preferred, with strong knowledge of medical coding systems and HIPAA compliance. The role involves coding discharged records, ensuring accuracy, and coordinating follow-up for deficient cases.

You will work within a team, contribute to data quality for reimbursement, and uphold patient confidentiality and safety practices across EHR systems.

Qualifications

• Requires 10+ years of general coding experience.
• AAPC certification preferred.
• Strong knowledge of medical coding systems, diagnosis and procedure sequencing.
• Familiarity with HIPAA and healthcare safety practices.
• Experience with electronic health records.

Responsibilities

• Assign diagnostic and procedure codes to discharged records.
• Coordinate follow-up on deficient records.
• Review and enter diagnoses and procedures to support reimbursement, data analysis, research, and regulatory compliance.
• Maintain confidentiality and HIPAA compliance; follow safety requirements.
• Assist senior staff as needed and ensure accuracy in coding documentation.

• What You Will Do:** Assign diagnostic and procedure codes to discharged patient records and coordinate follow-up on deficient or delinquent records under the direction of a senior-level employee. Provide age-appropriate service as defined by the department's scope of service.
• Review, identify, code, abstract, and enter diagnoses and procedures to support reimbursement, data analysis, research, and federal regulatory compliance.
• Follow up on deficient and delinquent discharge records, request missing diagnosis or procedure information, audit incomplete charts, investigate missing records, and notify the supervisor as needed.
• Maintain accurate and complete coded information, protect patient confidentiality, follow applicable HIPAA and safety requirements, and perform other duties as assigned.
