Qualifications

• Bachelor’s degree from accredited university.
• Valid Texas teaching certificate with required special education endorsements for assignments.
• Knowledge of ARD Committee process and IEP goal setting and implementation.
• Knowledge of how to adapt curriculum and instruction for special needs.
• Effective communication skills.
• Student teaching, approved internship, or related work experience.

Responsibilities

• Collaborate with students, parents, and other staff to develop IEP through ARD for each student.
• Implement instructional, therapeutic, or skill development program for assigned students.
• Assess student learning styles and plan appropriate instructional strategies and materials.
• Present subject matter per IEP guidelines using varied techniques and media.
• Modify regular curricula and assist students in regular classes with assignments.
• Participate in ARD Committee meetings regularly.
• Assist in selecting books, equipment, and instructional media.
• Conduct ongoing assessments of student achievement through formal and informal testing.
• Provide or supervise personal and medical care as stated in IEP.
• Sponsor extracurricular activities as assigned; participate in approved activities.
• Consult district and outside resources regarding education, social, medical, and personal needs.
• Create classroom environment conducive to learning and development.
• Manage student behavior and enforce discipline per IEP; crisis intervention when needed.
• Coordinate with teachers on behavior management per IEP.
• Protect students, equipment, and facilities; maintain safety.
• Plan and supervise work of aides and volunteers.
• Establish open communication with parents, students, principals, and teachers.
• Maintain professional relationships with parents and colleagues.
• Participate in staff development and stay informed of regulations and policies for special education.
• Compile and file reports and required documents.
• Attend faculty meetings and participate in committees as required.
• Follow district safety protocols and emergency procedures.
