Job summary

George Washington Carver Academy in Highland Park, MI is seeking a Special Education Coordinator to join our team. Must have Michigan Teacher Certification and endorsement.

The Academy serves PreK–8 as a public charter school and aims to foster a nurturing environment where scholars engage in learning and positively impact their community. The coordinator will support IEP processes, collaborate with families and service providers, and ensure compliance with state and federal requirements.

Qualifications

• Bachelor's degree in Special Education, Education, or a related field required.
• Valid Michigan teaching certificate with appropriate Special Education endorsement required.
• Previous experience working in special education, preferably in a school-based setting.
• Knowledge of IDEA, IEP development, special education compliance, and Michigan special education requirements.
• Strong organizational, communication, and interpersonal skills.
• Ability to collaborate effectively with teachers, administrators, families, and service providers.
• Ability to maintain accurate documentation and meet required timelines.
• Proficiency with Microsoft Office and school-based student information/IEP systems preferred.
• Commitment to supporting an inclusive, student-centered educational environment.

Responsibilities

• Coordinate the delivery of special education programs and services across the school.
• Support special education teachers and staff with IEP development, implementation, and compliance.
• Monitor IEP timelines, evaluations, reevaluations, and required documentation.
• Ensure special education practices comply with IDEA, Michigan Department of Education requirements, and school policies.
• Provide guidance and support to staff regarding special education procedures, accommodations, modifications, and instructional strategies.
• Participate in IEP meetings and provide support to staff, students, and families.
• Collaborate with school leadership, general education teachers, related service providers, and families to address student needs.
• Monitor student progress and assist with identifying appropriate interventions and supports.
• Maintain accurate and confidential student records and special education documentation.
• Assist with staff training and professional development related to special education.
• Support the development and implementation of effective systems for special education programming and compliance.
• Communicate effectively with families and respond to questions or concerns regarding special education services.
• Maintain confidentiality of student and school information.
• Perform other duties as assigned by school leadership.
