Job summary

Chicago Public Schools is seeking a Special Education Classroom Assistant to support students with disabilities. Under supervision, you will assist in instruction, provide one-on-one tutoring, and help with daily living tasks and safety needs.

Responsibilities include recording student progress, supporting teachers during field trips, and assisting with behavior documentation. A paraprofessional license or 60 college credits plus related exams are required; CPR training is a plus.

Qualifications

• Certification requirements include a valid TASN (NCLB) paraprofessional license from ISBE or completion after 60 college credits or paraprofessional exam (Work Keys/Parapro).
• Knowledge of the characteristics of students with various disabilities; strong English grammar, spelling and basic math.
• Ability to work with students ages birth to 21, follow instructions, and complete basic written reports; CPR training is highly desirable.

Responsibilities

• Assist Special Education teachers in elementary and high schools, provide one-on-one tutoring and personal hygiene support when needed.
• Support daily living skills, positioning equipment, feeding and accompanying students on trips; correct homework and maintain behavior notes.
• Attend workshops and update skills as required; help maintain records of students’ behavior and progress.
