Job summary

Chicago Public Schools is seeking a Special Education Classroom Assistant to support teachers in delivering instruction to students with disabilities. The role includes one-on-one tutoring, assisting with daily living activities, and helping with classroom equipment and mobility needs.

Qualifications

• Must possess a valid TASN (NCLB) paraprofessional license from ISBE, or have 60 college credits or pass paraprofessional assessments (Work Keys/Parapro).
• Knowledge of characteristics of students with various disabilities.
• Good knowledge of English grammar and spelling.
• Ability to work with students with disabilities from birth to 21 years old.
• Ability to follow written and oral instructions; complete basic written reports.
• CPR training is highly desirable; if not trained, will complete CPR training as a condition of employment.
• Good oral and written communication; ability to operate photocopying and audiovisual equipment.

Responsibilities

• Assist teachers in reinforcing lessons for students with various disabilities.
• Provide one-on-one tutoring and personal hygiene assistance as needed.
• Assist with mobility, tools, and equipment for students in classrooms.
• Accompany students to pools and clinics for supervised activities.
• Take notes for students who cannot take notes themselves; correct homework and maintain behavior records.
• Accompany students and teachers on field trips and attend workshops or in-service training to update job skills.
