Job summary

Chicago Public Schools is seeking a Special Education Classroom Assistant to support students with diverse disabilities in elementary and high schools. The role involves one-on-one tutoring, personal care tasks, and assisting teachers with instructional activities to help students achieve IEP goals.

The position requires a valid TASN paraprofessional license, 60 college credits or equivalent, and strong communication skills.

Qualifications

• Must possess a valid TASN (NCLB) paraprofessional license from ISBE.
• Completion of at least 60 semester hours of college credit or paraprofessional exam (Work Keys or Parapro).
• CPR training is highly desirable or training will be provided.
• Good oral and written communication skills.
• Ability to work with students with various disabilities.

Responsibilities

• Reinforce instruction for students with various disabilities in elementary and high schools.
• Lifts and positions non-ambulatory students as directed and per physician notes.
• Provide one-on-one tutoring to reinforce learning concepts.
• Provide one-on-one personal hygiene services for students with severe disabilities.
• Assist with tools and equipment for students with orthopedic impairments (wheelchairs, devices).
• Teach daily living skills for independent maintenance and self-sufficiency.
• Accompany students to pools and medical clinics for personal services.
• Assist in feeding students who cannot feed themselves.
• Take notes for students unable to do so.
• Correct homework and exam materials.
• Maintain written records of student behavior.
• accompany on class field trips.
• Attend workshops and in-service training to update skills.
