Job summary

East Baton Rouge Parish School System is seeking a paraprofessional to assist teachers in a special education setting, supporting instructional programs and student needs. Under supervision of the principal and certified teacher, you will help prepare materials, manage the classroom, and assist with student care and behavior support.

Responsibilities include supervision during lunch, bus, and playground; maintaining records; and aiding substitutes.

Qualifications

• High school diploma or high school equivalently completed.
• Two (2) years of study at an institution of higher education (48 college credit hours) or an Associate's degree or higher.
• Minimum score of 450 on the ETS Parapro Exam.

Responsibilities

• Assist teachers in preparing instructional materials and classroom displays.
• Help maintain a neat and orderly classroom.
• Assist with inventory, care, and maintenance of classroom equipment.
• Assist teachers in maintaining administrative records and preparing required reports.
• Provide orientation and assistance to substitute teachers.
• Assist students with physical disabilities including transferring to/from wheelchairs, lifting, or positioning.
• Assist students with physical needs and personal care, including feeding, bathroom needs, and personal hygiene; including catheterization after proper training.
• Help manage student behavior, intervene in crises, and restrain disruptive or dangerous behavior as needed.
• Attend to individual students' special medical, physical, or communicative needs.
• Work with students or small groups to develop motor skills and conduct exercises.
• Supervise students during the school day (lunchroom, bus, playground).
• Keep teachers informed of special needs or problems of individual students.
• Participate in staff development, meetings, and events.
• Maintain confidentiality regarding personnel and students.
• Uphold safety rules and district policies.

Education
