Job summary

Wake County Public School System is seeking an Instructional Assistant-Special Education to support students with IEPs in elementary, middle, or high school settings. The role focuses on assisting teachers, implementing behavior plans, and enabling classroom access to instruction.

The position requires CPI certification, flexibility to work some evenings or weekends, and a strong emphasis on confidentiality and student well-being in a nonexempt, noncertified environment.

Qualifications

• High school diploma or GED.
• Meet ESSA requirements: six semester hours in early childhood education, or two years of work experience in an early childhood setting.
• Maintain CPI certification (training provided by WCPSS) and renew on schedule.
• CPR and First Aid certification preferred.
• Experience with or assisting individuals with special needs.

Responsibilities

• Supports teachers in coordinating instructional programs for special education students and IEPs.
• Assists with strategies to implement student behavioral intervention plans.
• Aids planning, organizing, evaluating activities, and preparing materials; ensures resources align with lesson plans.
• Demonstrates professional/technical skills to support student achievement.
• Maintains a positive disposition, exercises good judgement, and stays calm with students.
• Provides in-class support promoting independence and self-determination.
• Assists with low- and high-tech assistive technology and AAC devices.
• Compiles, maintains, and files reports and confidentiality.
• Participates in district staff development and professional growth.
• Coordinates student transitions between classes and assists with health care needs (hygiene, mobility, feeding, etc.).
• Provides support for adaptive equipment and CPI-related behavioral assistance.
• Performs related duties as assigned.
• SATA duties: one-on-one with student with severe to profound disabilities; attends specialized training.
