Job summary

• Supporting statewide public safety initiatives by conducting field-based sex offender verifications and ensuring timely, accurate updates to the Virginia Sex Offender Management System (VSOMS).
• Ensuring compliance with the Code of Virginia through home, work, and school verifications, SP-236 filings, photo updates and documentation for court and investigative use.
• Collaborating with Troopers, probation and parole officers, courts, law enforcement agencies, and community partners to advance the mission of the Firearms and Sex Offender Investigative Unit.

Minimum Qualifications

Knowledge of:

• Court proceedings.
• Case management.
• The probation and parole process.

Skill in:

• Operating a computer to include Microsoft software applications.
• Data entry.

Ability to:

• Operate a motor vehicle.
• Effectively communicate both verbally and in writing in English.
• Make decisions independently by applying policies, rules, and regulations.
• Work independently, follow instructions, and pay close attention to details.
• Identify and respond to safety risks in unpredictable environments.
• Manage evolving workloads and prioritize deadlines.
• Work a flexible schedule including mornings, evenings, and weekends.
• Build professional rapport with offenders, Troopers, supervisors, and external partners.
• Possession of a valid Virginia Operator’s License.
• Graduation from high school or equivalent.

Compliance Officers assigned to the Firearms and Sex Offender Investigative Unit (FSOIU) shall be assigned to a specific region. Compliance Officers shall reside within 45 minutes from any border of their assigned county or city.

Additional Considerations

• Experience or training in law enforcement operational procedures and verbal de-escalation techniques preferred.
