Job summary

Stantec’s Southern California Environmental Services team seeks on-call archaeologists to support field surveys, monitoring, and documentation across typical CEQA and NRHP projects.

You will work with field directors and project managers, using GPS/GNSS tools and field forms while traveling to offices and field sites in southern California. A field-school or equivalent training plus California archaeology familiarity is preferred.

Qualifications

• Minimum bachelor’s degree in Anthropology or Archaeology.
• At least 1 year of field experience (field school, internship, CRM work).
• Ability to conduct fieldwork in remote Southern California conditions.
• Familiarity with DPR 523 site forms is a plus.
• Valid driver’s license and good driving record.

Responsibilities

• Support Field Directors and Project Managers with pre-field planning and surveys.
• Assist shovel test pits, test excavations, and monitoring of construction.
• Identify and document precontact and historic resources following standards.
• Create site records, feature forms, soil descriptions, maps, and logs.
• Use GIS tools and GPS units with sub-meter accuracy.
• Conduct desktop research and archival reviews as needed.
• Support impact assessments and site significance evaluations.
• Prepare daily logs, monitoring reports, and HSSE documentation.
• Follow safety protocols and work respectfully in field environments.
• Work well in teams or independently across varied field conditions.
