Job summary

State of West Virginia seeks an Equipment Operator to perform skilled highway construction and maintenance tasks. The role uses skid steer, bucket trucks, loaders, and heavy trucks, with field repairs and routine maintenance.

Applicants must pursue CDL in the apprenticeship program and may work irregular hours including weekends. The position emphasizes safety, routine records, and operation of highway equipment.

Qualifications

• Knowledge of procedures, techniques, and equipment used in the area of assignment.
• Knowledge of methods, materials, tools, and equipment used in the area of assignment.
• Knowledge of occupational hazards and safety standards in the area of assignment.
• Knowledge of maintenance and repair methods practiced in building maintenance trades.
• Ability to repair and maintain tools and equipment used.
• Ability to read operating manuals and specifications in the area of assignment.
• Ability to safely operate basic hand and power tools.
• Ability to climb high steel structures.

Responsibilities

• Drive dump, flatbed, or tandem-axle trucks.
• Operate power vegetation equipment and attachments.
• Operate highway maintenance equipment and attachments.
• Operate heavy vehicles/GVWR 26,001 or greater.
• Clean and lubricate equipment and check fluid levels.
• Make minor mechanical repairs in the field (tires, blades, filters).
• Repair and construct culverts.
• Patch cement, pavement and bridge decks.
• Seal joints and cracks in paved surfaces.
• Transport fuel to equipment.
• Some positions may require CDL certifications after employment.
