Job summary

Hofstra University in Hempstead, NY is seeking a Full-Time Shuttle Bus Driver to support the University’s transportation system. You will operate campus and off-campus routes, delivering safe, courteous service to students, faculty, and staff.

Qualifications include a NY CDL Class B with Passenger Endorsement and Air Brake Qualification, 3+ years driving experience, and a clean driving record. Evening and weekend availability is required.

Qualifications

  • Must be at least 21 years old.
  • Minimum three (3) years of relevant experience.
  • Valid New York State CDL Class B Driver's license with Passenger Endorsement and Air Brake Qualification.

Responsibilities

  • Safely transport students, faculty, staff, and other University community members along designated shuttle routes.
  • Provide courteous, professional, and customer-focused service to all passengers.
  • Conduct pre-trip and post-trip vehicle inspections to ensure safety.
  • Maintain cleanliness and overall appearance of assigned vehicles.
  • Adhere to University policies, NYS traffic laws, and DOT regulations.
  • Report vehicle maintenance issues, accidents, or safety concerns.
  • Assist passengers during boarding and exiting to ensure safety.
  • Maintain accurate records and complete required reports.
  • Support special events and campus programs as needed.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.

Description:

Reporting to the Director of Public Safety for Campus Transportation, the Full-Time Shuttle Bus Driver plays a vital role in supporting the University’s transportation system by providing safe, reliable, and courteous shuttle service to students, faculty, and staff. Drivers operate University vehicles along designated campus and off-campus routes while delivering exceptional customer service and maintaining the highest standards of safety and professionalism.
Responsibilities include, but are not limited to:

  • Safely transport students, faculty, staff, and other members of the University community along designated shuttle routes.
  • Provide courteous, professional, and customer-focused service to all passengers.
  • Conduct required pre-trip and post-trip vehicle inspections to ensure vehicles are safe and operating properly.
  • Maintain the cleanliness and overall appearance of assigned vehicles.
  • Adhere to all University policies, New York State traffic laws, and Department of Transportation regulations.
  • Promptly report vehicle maintenance issues, accidents, or safety concerns.
  • Assist passengers as appropriate while ensuring a safe boarding and exiting process.
  • Maintain accurate records and complete required reports.
  • Support special events, campus programs, and other transportation assignments as needed.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.

Shift assignments are awarded in accordance with the applicable collective bargaining agreement and based on department operational needs. Newly hired Full-Time Bus Drivers will be required to work a 40-hour week. Work schedules will vary depending on the University’s transportation demands. Candidates must be available to work evenings and weekends, as these are critical periods for shuttle operations. Additional hours, including overtime, may be required to support special events, campus programs, and other departmental transportation needs.

Qualifications:
  • Must be at least 21 years old.
  • Minimum three (3) years of relevant experience.
  • Valid New York State CDL Class B Drivers license with:
  • Passenger (P) Endorsement
  • Air Brake Qualification
  • No restrictions affecting passenger vehicle operation
  • Safe driving record with no significant violations.
  • Ability to interact professionally with a diverse population of students, faculty, staff, visitors, and community members.
  • Ability to work independently while maintaining a high level of safety, professionalism, and reliability.
Preferred Qualifications:
  • Previous experience operating passenger shuttle buses in a university, municipal, transit, or hospitality environment.
  • Familiarity with campus transportation operations and customer service best practices.
  • Experience working in a diverse and inclusive environment.
