Job summary

General Dynamics NASSCO in Norfolk, Virginia, is seeking Shipfitter Journeyperson 4 for 2nd shift (3 PM – 11 PM). You will read blueprints, lay out plates, pipes, and structures, and work with weld symbols to prepare materials for welding.

Candidates must demonstrate safe use of power tools, create templates for fabrication, and assemble foundations and deck houses. Five openings are available; access to Navy facilities is required. This is a full-time role with equal opportunity employment.

Qualifications

• Be able to plan and complete work with little supervision using blueprints.
• Knowledge of plate, pipe, and structural layouts, including complex angles.
• Familiarity with ship nomenclature and locating structures to frames and centerlines.
• Understand weld symbols and material preparation for welding.
• Skills in tack welding, burning, and use of power tools.
• Capable of making templates for fabrication and installation.
• Able to assemble foundations, deck houses, and ship structures.
• Know 5S guidelines and standard items.

Responsibilities

• Plan and complete work with little supervision using blueprints.
• Layout plates, pipes, and structural shapes including complex angles.
• Identify structures by ship nomenclature and relation to frames.
• Apply weld symbols to material preparation for welding.
• Use power tools (shears, saws, presses) and perform tack welding.
• Create templates for fabrication and installation.
• Assemble foundations, deck houses, and specialized structures.
• Follow 5S guidelines and standard items.
