Job summary

Interfaith Works in Rockville, MD seeks a Director of Emergency Shelter Services (LCSW required) to lead and oversee all emergency shelter programs, ensuring safe, person-centered operations compliant with contracts and policies.

The role supervises shelter Program Directors, manages staffing, budgeting, and performance, and maintains on-site presence across shifts to uphold high standards of care and continuous quality improvement.

Qualifications

• Master's degree in Social Work.
• Must be a board approved supervisor or be willing to obtain board approval.
• At least seven years of progressively responsible experience in homeless services, behavioral health, human services, residential services, emergency shelter, or a related field.
• At least five years of supervisory or program management experience, including responsibility for managers or multidisciplinary teams.

Responsibilities

• Provide overall leadership, direction, and accountability for all Interfaith Works emergency shelter programs.
• Directly supervise shelter Program Directors and establish clear expectations related to program quality, staff performance, fiscal stewardship, compliance, and guest services.
• Conduct regular individual supervision and leadership meetings with Program Directors to review operational performance, staffing, budget status, incidents, program outcomes, risks, and corrective actions.
• Ensure Program Directors are effectively supervising and developing their respective management teams and holding staff accountable for established performance expectations.
• Establish consistent operational standards across shelter programs while recognizing program-specific contractual and population needs.
• Maintain regular on-site visibility across shelters, including periodic visits during evenings, overnight hours, weekends, and other nontraditional times as appropriate.
• Identify emerging operational or programmatic concerns and intervene early before issues become significant organizational, contractual, financial, or safety risks.
