Job summary

Homes for the Homeless invites applications for a Custodian/Porter at our Families with Children facility in the Jamaica area of Queens, NY. The role focuses on maintaining a clean, safe environment, assisting with laundry, and supporting basic repairs to ensure smooth daily operations.

The position requires a high school diploma and custodial experience, with physical capability to lift up to 60 pounds and perform standing tasks for long periods.

Qualifications

• High school diploma or equivalent is required.
• Experience with custodial work.
• Knowledge of safety hazards and proper use of cleaning and sanitizing solutions.
• Ability to perform basic repairs and operate tools or equipment used in routine maintenance.
• Prolonged periods of standing.
• Must be able to lift, bend, stoop, climb, reach, and lift up to 60 pounds at a time.

Responsibilities

• Performs general cleaning and custodial duties in the common areas of the building.
• Performs minor repairs and maintenance such as replacing light fixtures or unclogging pipes.
• Assists in cleaning and sanitizing restrooms and cafeteria.
• Performs limited grounds maintenance such as mowing and trimming lawns and hedges and cleaning snow from sidewalks.
• Ensures heating and cooling systems are operational.
• Ensures cleaning and maintenance supplies are stocked.
• Vacuum, sweep, scrub, wax, and polish floors using brooms, mops or powered machines to strip floors.
• Washes windows, glass partitions, and mirrors
• Assist with Laundry Services.
• Clean and turnover housing units.
• Dust and Disinfect furniture, walls, machines, and equipment.
• Assists in examining the building for safety hazards; reports deficiencies to Maintenance Supervisor, Director of Building Operations, and/or Administrator of the Facility.
• Performs other related duties as assigned.
