Job summary

Care-For-the-Homeless- in New York City is seeking a Porter for Residential Services. The role focuses on maintaining cleanliness across the shelter, its offices, kitchens, and common areas while supporting daily operations and safety compliance.

Key duties include on-site maintenance, deliveries, inventory control, and collaboration with contracted specialists. The position requires physical stamina and the ability to work weekends and holidays within a DHS-regulated environment.

Qualifications

• High School Diploma or GED preferred.
• Minimum of three (3) years demonstrated experience in building maintenance.
• Must be able to work weekends/holidays.
• Ability to stand and lift up to 70 pounds on occasion and bend, kneel, stoop and wipe.
• Able to communicate effectively and work in a team environment.

Responsibilities

• Maintain cleanliness of the Shelter building and environment, including offices, kitchen, restrooms, and common areas.
• Maintain a detailed understanding of the overall property and resident-based facility.
• Inspect the building daily; perform routine preventative maintenance and address safety issues.
• Clean/upkeep resident areas and assist with general maintenance tasks.
• Handle on-site projects (painting, installing and repairing) as assigned.
• Assist with garbage removal and orderliness of the garbage room.
• Receive deliveries and move them within the building; log packages with facility manager.
• Maintain inventory of custodial supplies and consumables; assist with extermination as needed.
• Collaborate with contracted specialists for seasonal or specialty tasks.
• Remove snow and ensure walkways are safe during inclement weather.
