Job summary

Harbor Steel & Supply Corporation is hiring a Shear & Grinder Operator for 1st shift. You will safely operate shear and grinding equipment to process steel according to customer specs, inspect in-process material, and maintain quality and housekeeping standards in a fast-paced environment.

The role requires measuring with precision tools, crane/forklift certification, and the ability to work as part of a team while following 5S and safety policies. Prior steel industry experience is preferred.

Qualifications

• Experience in steel/metals manufacturing or warehouse preferred.
• Mechanical aptitude and ability to operate industrial equipment.
• Good basic math skills.
• Ability to accurately use measuring tools (tape measures, micrometers, calipers).
• Ability to read and follow written instructions and specs.
• Crane/forklift certification required.
• Ability to work independently and as part of a team.
• High school diploma or equivalent.

Responsibilities

• Operate shear and grinder equipment safely and efficiently.
• Process steel and metal products according to customer specs.
• Review work orders to ensure accuracy and material utilization.
• Check material tolerances and squareness.
• Perform IPIR documentation and inspections as required.
• Maintain equipment and oil levels; perform preventive maintenance checks.
• Measure materials with tape measures, micrometers, C-micrometers, depth micrometers, and calipers.
• Package finished material per specs and safely move material with cranes and forklifts.
• Keep work area clean, organized, and safe; follow 5S and safety standards.

Shear & Grinder Operator 1st Shift

Position Summary

Harbor Steel is seeking a dependable and motivated Shear & Grinder Operator to join our team. This position is responsible for operating both shear and grinding equipment to safely and accurately process steel and other metal products according to customer specifications. The successful candidate will be responsible for maintaining quality, productivity, safety, equipment, and housekeeping standards while working in a fast-paced industrial environment.

Essential Duties & Responsibilities

• Operate shear and grinder equipment safely and efficiently.
• Shear and grind steel and other metal products according to customer specifications.
• Review work orders and production requirements to ensure accurate processing and maximum material utilization.
• Check material to maintain proper tolerances, dimensions, and squareness.
• Perform in-process inspections and complete IPIR documentation as required.
• Operate and maintain grinder and shear equipment, including maintaining appropriate oil levels and oiling plates as required.
• Accurately measure material using tape measures, micrometers, C-micrometers, depth micrometers, and calipers.
• Package finished material according to customer specifications.
• Safely operate overhead cranes and forklifts to move and position material.
• Utilize the process scheduler and other production systems as required.
• Perform scheduled preventive maintenance checks on equipment.
• Maintain a clean, organized, and safe work area by removing debris, boards, banding, shavings, and other materials.
• Follow company 5S, quality, and safety standards.
• Assist with other warehouse and production functions as needed.
• Perform other duties as assigned.

Qualifications

• Previous steel, metals, manufacturing, warehouse, or industrial experience preferred.
• Product knowledge preferred.
• Mechanical aptitude and the ability to learn and operate industrial equipment.
• Good basic math skills.
• Ability to accurately use measuring tools, including tape measures, micrometers, C-micrometers, depth micrometers, and calipers.
• Ability to read and follow written instructions, work orders, and customer specifications.
• Ability to safely operate overhead cranes and forklifts; certification required.
• Ability to work independently while also functioning effectively as part of a team.
• High school diploma, technical training, or equivalent experience preferred.
• Ability and willingness to perform other warehouse and production duties as needed.

Physical & Safety Requirements

Employees must be able to:

• Lift and handle materials weighing up to 50 lbs.
• Work safely around heavy steel, moving materials, and industrial equipment.
• Stand, walk, bend, reach, and perform repetitive physical tasks throughout the shift.
• Follow all company safety policies and procedures.
• Maintain a clean and organized work environment.
• Work the shifts required by management.
