Job summary

Ohio Bureau of Workers' Compensation (BWC) is seeking an experienced attorney to oversee non‑judicial settlements and negotiate settlement options with public and private employers and injured workers. This on‑site role involves reviewing filings, drafting briefs, and representing the agency in settlements.

Admission to the Ohio Bar is required, with at least 2 years practicing workers' compensation law, and 6 months of supervisory or negotiation experience.

Qualifications

  • Admission to the Ohio Bar per Section 4705.01 of Revised Code.
  • Minimum 2 years of experience as a licensed attorney practicing workers' compensation law.
  • 6 months training or 6 months experience in supervisory principles, management or settlement negotiations.
  • Must be able to provide own transportation.
  • Or 18 months experience as BWC Attorney 1; or 12 months experience as BWC Attorney 2; substitution allowed for experience, but not licensure.

Responsibilities

  • Plans, directs, and coordinates non‑judicial administrative settlements in assigned territory, negotiating settlement amounts.
  • Develops and implements settlement strategies to maximize savings for BWC.
  • Reviews settlement filings and prepares legal briefs; researches Ohio Revised Code; represents BWC Administrator in settlements when needed.
  • Reviews complaints for potential legal violations; researches legislation; drafts legislation to expand settlement options.
  • Participates in revision and drafting of BWC policy on settlements; provides legal opinions on Medicare-related payments.
  • Handles duties related to the BWC Board of Directors, attends meetings, takes minutes, and supports board operations.
  • Trains settlement personnel and consults with the Office of the Ohio Attorney General; acts as a referee in health partnership program hearings.
