Job summary

Amazon Robotics seeks a Senior Vision System Engineer to lead the development of perception systems across sensors, ML models, and edge hardware. You will bridge customer problems and engineering teams, shaping architectures from sensor choice to deployment strategy.

Expect cross-functional collaboration and field-enabled design decisions. You will drive discussions with hardware and software teams, review benchmarks, and present trade studies to optimize performance, cost, and power budgets

Qualifications

• Bachelor's degree with 7+ years in Optical Engineering, Computer Science, Robotics, Electrical/Computer Engineering or related field
• Master's degree with 5+ years or PhD with 3+ years in related fields is preferred
• Experience translating customer or product requirements into engineering specifications
• Experience with vision systems, imaging systems, or sensor-based perception systems
• Experience with ML inference workloads on embedded/edge compute platforms
• Experience in evaluating sensor technologies and trade-offs

Responsibilities

• Engage directly with customers to understand perception and sensing requirements and translate into engineering specs
• Evaluate and recommend sensor technologies (cameras, depth sensors, barcode readers) with trade-off analysis on resolution, frame rate, FOV, cost, reliability
• Define ML model requirements for perception tasks (depth estimation, object detection, damage detection, barcode reading)
• Profile compute resource needs for running inference models and determine deployment locations (edge, cloud, hybrid)
• Communicate hardware requirements including power budgets, memory bandwidth, thermal constraints, I/O interfaces
• Author system architecture documents, ICDs, and technical trade studies
• Drive cross-functional alignment between software, hardware, and product teams to meet customer requirements
• Support lab and field activities related to sensor integration, system validation, performance characterization
• Identify technical risks early and propose mitigation balancing performance, cost, and schedule
