Job summary

Markel is seeking an Underwriter/Sr. Underwriter to join our team in the United States.

The role focuses on underwriting Inland Marine and Railroad risks, maintaining profitability and using underwriting tools to classify and price risk according to guidelines. You will liaise with regional managers and product line leaders to optimize accounts and participate in audits, with opportunities to cross-sell Markel products.

Qualifications

• Minimum 3 years of current experience underwriting Inland Marine/Railroad business.
• Demonstrated knowledge of coverage forms and pricing considerations.
• Strong written and verbal communication skills; ability to present to leadership.
• Flexible to travel up to 25% when required.

Responsibilities

• Review, analyze, accept, and decline Railroad/rolling stock risks for profitability.
• Underwrite and select new business generating underwriting profit.
• Manage renewal book and implement corrective profitability measures.
• Coordinate with regional managers and product line leaders on accounts.
• Participate in audits or underwriting meetings as required.
• Build relationships with key producers and cross-sell Markel products.
• Review competitor forms and pricing to market Markel effectively.
