Job summary

EMC Insurance Companies is seeking an experienced Commercial Lines Underwriter to manage a high-volume book with strong underwriting authority. The role requires evaluating complex risk, pricing exposures, and developing agency relationships to deliver superior client experiences.

You will mentor less experienced underwriters, collaborate with marketing and branch management, and ensure coverage decisions are clear to agents while supporting business growth across multiple locations.

Qualifications

• Bachelor’s degree in insurance or business administration.
• Five years of experience in commercial lines underwriting.
• CPCU designation preferred.

Essential Functions:

• Selects, grows and maintains a profitable book of business for assigned high-volume territory with a high level of underwriting authority

Education & Experience:

• Bachelor’s degree, preferably in insurance or business administration
• Five years of experience in commercial lines underwriting
• Insurance designations, such as CPCU preferred

Knowledge, Skills & Abilities:

• Excellent knowledge of underwriting and risk analysis
• Exceptional problem-solving skills and the ability to make sound decisions
• Strong customer service skills
• Strong computer skills, including knowledge of Microsoft Office and social media
• Ability to work on multiple projects while meeting deadlines
• Excellent written and verbal communication skills, including the ability to speak effectively before groups
• Strong presentation skills preferred
• Ability to work effectively with others, as well as independently
• Demonstrated leadership qualities
• Occasional travel; a valid driver’s license with an acceptable motor vehicle report per company standards required if traveling

The hiring salary range for this position will vary based on geographic location, falling within either of the following:

$92,670 - $128,045 or $102,443 - $140,845

A hiring range represents a subset of the full salary range.The actual salary will depend on several factors, includingrelevant education, skills, and experience of an applicant, geographic location, and business needs.
