Job summary

EMC Insurance Companies is seeking a skilled underwriter in North Carolina to manage and grow a profitable regional book of business. You will evaluate accounts, set appropriate risk pricing, and collaborate with agents and marketing teams to deliver exceptional customer experiences.

Ideal candidates have a strong background in commercial lines underwriting, solid problem-solving skills, and the ability to work both independently and with a team. Some travel may be required as part of the role.

Qualifications

• Bachelor's degree in insurance or business administration or equivalent experience.
• Three years of experience in commercial lines underwriting or related field.
• Insurance designations such as CPCU are preferred.

Essential Functions

• Maintains and grows a profitable book of business for assigned territory
• Evaluates accounts for risk selection and pricing purposes

• Collaborates with marketing representatives to ensure agents receive great customer experiences
• Collaborates with experienced underwriters to gain understanding in underwriting best practices

Education & Experience

• Bachelor's degree, preferably in insurance or business administration, or equivalent relevant experience
• Three years of experience in commercial lines underwriting or related experience
• Insurance designations, such as CPCU preferred

Knowledge, Skills & Abilities

• Good knowledge of underwriting and risk analysis
• Strong problem-solving skills and the ability to make sound decisions
• Strong customer service skills
• Ability to work effectively with others, as well as independently
• Ability to maintain high standards of professional competence
• Strong computer skills, including knowledge of Microsoft Office and social media
• Ability to work on multiple projects while meeting deadlines
• Strong written and verbal communication skills
• Occasional travel; a valid driver’s license with an acceptable motor vehicle report per company standards required if traveling

The hiring salary range for this position will vary based on geographic location, falling within either of the following:

$78,726 - $108,771 or $87,008 - $119,646

A hiring range represents a subset of the full salary range. The actual salary will depend on several factors, including relevant education, skills, and experience of an applicant, geographic location, and business needs.
