Job summary

OpenAI is seeking an Associate General Counsel to lead commercial legal strategy for silicon initiatives and the broader semiconductor ecosystem supporting our AI infrastructure.

The role requires translating highly technical issues into practical commercial structures and leading high-value transactions across a global ecosystem. Based in San Francisco, CA, with a hybrid model and relocation assistance.

Qualifications

• 12+ years of legal experience in technology transactions and commercial contracting.
• JD degree and CA license to practice law.
• Mix of in-house and top-tier law firm experience advising senior business and engineering leaders.
• Background in technology, infrastructure, manufacturing, or supply chain.
• Demonstrated ability to structure and negotiate high-value agreements.
• Strong judgment in managing commercial, IP, confidentiality, and regulatory risk.
• Familiarity with global supply chains and cross-border compliance.
• Excellent communication skills translating complex issues to practical guidance.
• Experience building scalable legal processes, templates, and workflows.

Responsibilities

• Lead commercial legal strategy and risk management for silicon initiatives.
• Advise senior stakeholders on strategic relationships and complex transactions.
• Draft, negotiate, and advise on development, manufacturing, supply, licensing, services, and partnerships.
• Structure commercial arrangements to support long-term business and operational needs.
• Advise on commercial and operational issues across product lifecycles.
• Coordinate with IP counsel on ownership, licensing, and confidentiality.
• Identify and manage material commercial, regulatory, and supply-chain risks.
• Collaborate with cross-functional teams to address global compliance issues.
• Lead resolution of escalations and drive timely decisions.
• Develop scalable legal playbooks, templates, and governance frameworks.
• Lead cross-functional legal work streams with outside counsel.
