OpenAI, Inc. is seeking a highly experienced Product Counsel to advise on hardware-enabled software, licensing, privacy, IP, and regulatory matters. You will work closely with product and engineering teams from development through launch and ongoing support.

The role requires a JD and CA license, with a hybrid in San Francisco, relocation assistance, and close collaboration across legal, engineering, and business functions.

Qualifications

• 8+ years of relevant legal experience, including product counseling for consumer devices or software embedded in hardware.
• Experience partnering with engineers to translate technical concepts into practical legal guidance.
• JD and CA license to practice law.

Responsibilities

• Work with product and engineering teams through development, launch, and ongoing support.
• Advise on software licensing, open-source, compatibility, and device support.
• Provide broad product counseling on consumer experiences, terms, disclosures, marketing claims, and regulatory requirements.
• Coordinate on product, IP, privacy, security, competition, and regulatory issues to align decisions with commitments.
• Build practical guidance and scalable review processes across teams.
