Job summary

Sam Houston State University seeks a Technical Writer II to plan, develop, and govern technical documentation supporting university technology systems and services. You will produce end-user guides, administrator references, and runbooks while ensuring accessibility and brand compliance.

Work with engineering, ERP, CRM, and other IT teams to align content with project milestones, conduct expert interviews, and enforce documentation standards and templates across the division.

Qualifications

• Bachelor’s degree in English, technical communication, information technology, instructional technology, or related field.
• Two years of experience in technical writing or documentation management.
• Relevant technical writing or content management certifications are desirable.
• Experience in a state institution of higher education is desirable.

Responsibilities

• Independently plans, develops, and maintains technical documentation including end-user guides, administrator references, configuration docs, runbooks, and knowledge base content.
• Partners with solution engineering, ERP, CRM, integration, and third-party teams to align documentation with milestones and handoff requirements.
• Conducts structured interviews with subject matter experts to translate information into clear, accessible content.
• Develops and enforces documentation standards, templates, naming conventions, and version control for the division’s library.
• Collaborates with IT Trainers and IT Communications Specialists to coordinate documentation with training and communications campaigns.
• Evaluates documentation quality and coverage, identifies gaps, and prioritizes remediation.
• Provides guidance and mentorship to Technical Writer I staff and ensures accessibility and brand guideline compliance.
