Job summary

Ursa Major is seeking a Senior Systems Engineer within the SMS Systems & Mission Team to drive safety, reliability, and risk management for propulsion systems. You will work with systems engineering, mission operations, design, test, manufacturing, and programs to develop robust safety strategies and ensure mission success.

You will also own the relationship with DoD Safety Review Boards and help shape hazard classifications and risk management across programs.

Qualifications

• Bachelor's degree or higher in an engineering field relevant to aerospace.
• 4+ years of experience in system safety, mission assurance, or systems engineering.
• Experience with solid rocket motors, propulsion systems, launch vehicles, or defense aerospace programs.
• Familiarity with risk analysis methods (FMEA, FHA, probabilistic risk assessment).
• Knowledge of aerospace industry standards (MIL-STD-882).
• Experience working with cross-functional teams and external customers.
• Ability to work in a fast-paced development environment and solve complex problems.

Responsibilities

• Develop and implement mission assurance processes to ensure product reliability, safety, and performance.
• Own relationship with Weapon Safety Boards and support motor qualification plans and test reports for WSESRB, JSWRB, and similar boards.
• Own inputs to Interim Hazard Classification (IHC) and Final Hazard Classification (FHC) planning, execution and approval.
• Establish and maintain best practices for risk-register management across programs and products.
• Collaborate with design and product teams to reduce product risk and develop system safety requirements.
• Perform system-level failure assessments (FMEA, FHA) to inform design and risk tracking.
• Establish end-to-end product lifecycle plans including handling restrictions, demilitarization, and disposal.
• Assist with flight test range safe execution planning.
• Lead failure investigations.
• Perform reliability assessments for motor products.
• Other duties as assigned.
