Job summary

Pacific Northwest National Laboratory (PNNL) invites applications for a System Safety Engineer within the Worker Safety and Health Program. This full-time, onsite role supports a dynamic research and engineering environment, focusing on hazards analysis, risk management, and regulatory compliance across complex systems.

You will lead hazard analyses, adapt methodologies (What-if, HAZOP, FMEA) to research settings, and collaborate with engineers, scientists, and operations staff to implement

Qualifications

• BS/BA and 7+ years of relevant experience OR MS/MA with 5+ years OR PhD with 3+ years.
• Bachelor’s degree in chemical, mechanical, nuclear engineering, or related field.
• Experience in a research laboratory or high-hazard environments.
• Experience with hazard and accident analyses and risk assessments.
• Strong written and verbal communication skills.

Responsibilities

• Implement Safety Programs as SME and promote a strong safety culture.
• Hazard identification, risk management, and mitigation planning.
• Lead analyses and assessments of system designs and procedures.
• Ensure compliance with federal, state, local laws and DOE orders.
• Coordinate contractor assurance and drive continuous safety improvement.
• Engage stakeholders across staff, management, and external partners.
