Job summary

Massachusetts state government agency is seeking a Senior System Administrator and DevOps Engineer to manage and modernize large-scale public health environments. You will balance legacy systems with a cloud-native AWS migration and POC initiatives.

The role requires deep RHEL, Oracle RDS, WebLogic experience, and strong scripting skills to automate operations and enable CI/CD across teams. This is a hybrid role with on-site work in Quincy, MA 2–3 days weekly.

Qualifications

• 15+ years enterprise IT experience in system administration or DevOps.
• Bachelor’s degree or higher in Information Systems, Computer Science, or related field.
• Deep experience with RHEL, Oracle databases, and WebLogic administration.
• Automation scripting with Shell and Python for operational tasks.

Responsibilities

• Install, configure, and manage RHEL servers across AWS EC2.
• Administer Java/J2EE apps on WebLogic; configure JDBC sources and pools.
• Support Oracle RDS; collaborate with DBAs on performance, backups, and DR.
• Monitor performance, availability, and security with Dynatrace and CloudWatch.
• Lead POC to rebuild legacy apps using AWS services (Lambda, ECS/EKS, S3).
• Automate infrastructure tasks using Shell, Python, WLST or Jython.
• Bridge dev and ops to streamline CI/CD delivery and knowledge sharing.

Job description

A Massachusetts state government agency is seeking a versatile Senior System Administrator and DevOps Engineer to manage, maintain, and modernize critical, large-scale public health application environments. This role sits at the intersection of traditional system administration and modern cloud architecture. You will be responsible for maintaining existing legacy applications while simultaneously building a Proof of Concept (POC) to re-architect and migrate the legacy infrastructure into a scalable, cloud-native AWS environment.

Responsibilities

• Install, configure, and manage Red Hat Enterprise Linux (RHEL) servers across AWS cloud environments (EC2 instances).
• Administer and troubleshoot complex Java/J2EE applications deployed on WebLogic servers, including configuring JDBC data sources, connection pools, and monitoring JVM performance.
• Provide system-level support for Oracle RDS, collaborating closely with DBA teams on performance tuning, backups, and disaster recovery.
• Monitor system performance, availability, and security utilizing tools like Dynatrace and AWS CloudWatch.
• Lead the architecture and development of a Proof of Concept (POC) to rebuild legacy applications using modern AWS services (Lambda, ECS/EKS, S3) and microservices.
• Automate routine infrastructure and administrative tasks using Shell, Python, Jython, or WLST scripting.
• Bridge the gap between development and operations teams to streamline CI/CD delivery and facilitate knowledge sharing.

Qualifications

• Experience: 15+ years of enterprise-level IT experience spanning System Administration, Healthcare Administration systems, or DevOps engineering.
• Degree: Bachelor’s degree or higher in Information Systems, Computer Science, or a related field.

Required Skills

• Legacy Infrastructure: Deep, hands-on administration experience with Red Hat Enterprise Linux (RHEL), Oracle databases, and WebLogic application servers.
• Automation & Scripting: High proficiency in scripting languages (Shell, Python) for operational automation.
• DevOps & CI/CD: Experience with version control (GitLab), containerization, and modern deployment pipelines.

Preferred Skills

• Hands-on experience migrating codebases from WebLogic to JBoss, and Oracle RDS to PostgreSQL.
• Deep expertise with modern container orchestration (ECS/EKS/Kubernetes).
• Familiarity with healthcare data management, compliance standards, and security best practices in cloud environments.

Location & Commute Requirement

This is a hybrid role supporting a Massachusetts state government agency. Per the client's geographic requirements, candidates must currently reside in Massachusetts, Rhode Island, Connecticut, or New Hampshire and be able to commute onsite to Quincy, MA 2-3 days a week.
