Job summary

Mesa Associates, Inc. seeks a Senior Substation Protection & Controls Engineering Technologist to lead P&C design for transmission substations across the United States.

The role emphasizes protection schemes, AC/DC schematics, panel layouts, wiring diagrams, and BOMs for medium to large-scale projects. Located within commuting distance of Knoxville or Chattanooga, TN, travel to client sites is expected 1–2 nights per month.

Qualifications

• 10+ years of transmission substation P&C design experience in the electric utility industry (12kV–230kV+).
• Strong proficiency in protection schemes, AC/DC schematics, and BOM management.
• Expert in AutoCAD; able to provide design markups with Bluebeam Revu.
• Independent problem-solving with clear documentation and minimal supervision.
• Client-facing capability to lead design reviews and discussions with utility clients.
• Mentorship skills to guide junior engineers and designers.

Responsibilities

• Create/check single-line/three-line diagrams, panel layouts, AC/DC schematics, wiring diagrams, and BOMs.
• Identify inconsistencies in drawings/specs; propose corrective actions with documentation.
• Perform peer reviews and QA to meet code, client, and internal standards.
• Coordinate handoffs with Relay Settings, Substation Physical, and Scoping groups.
• Contribute to internal knowledge base and support proposals with scope input.
