Mesa Associates, Inc. seeks a Senior Substation Protection & Controls Engineer to lead protection and control design for clients across the United States. You’ll guide projects from scoping through energization as the licensed PE on the team.

Lead a team of engineers and designers, review drawings, and stamp deliverables while mentoring junior staff. Location near Knoxville or Chattanooga with occasional travel.

Qualifications

• Active PE license is required for the role.
• 8+ years of transmission substation P&C design experience (12kV–230kV+).
• Strong protection expertise: CTs, VTs, differential protection, breakers, lines.
• Expert with AutoCAD; comfortable with Bluebeam Revu for markups and reviews.
• Able to lead design reviews and client discussions with utility clients.
• Independent owner of complex packages from scoping to closeout.
• Willing to mentor junior engineers and set QA standards.
• Location within commuting distance of Knoxville or Chattanooga, TN.
• Willing to travel 1–2 single-night trips per month.

Responsibilities

• Lead design of single-line/three-line diagrams and BoMs for substation projects.
• Review, stamp, and seal P&C drawings and calculations as PE.
• Coordinate with Relay Settings and other disciplines to align packages.
• Own client communication on P&C scope and design rationale.
• Develop internal templates, QA checklists, and improve processes.
• Support hiring and onboarding of engineers on active projects.
