Job summary

Grid United is seeking a Substation Engineering Manager to lead AC substation and switchyard design within major transmission projects. You will direct design activities, review technical submittals, and coordinate with internal teams and external consultants to ensure safe, compliant outcomes.

The role is optionally remote or based in Houston, TX, with up to 25% travel. Requirements include a Bachelor's in Electrical Engineering (ABET) and 5+ years in substation design; 8+ years preferred, plus

Qualifications

• Bachelor's degree in electrical engineering from an ABET-accredited program.
• Minimum 5 years in substation engineering design; 8+ years preferred.
• Experience with AC substation interfaces with HVDC systems.
• Strong communication, leadership and teamwork.
• Knowledge of protection and control, grounding and BoP concepts.

Responsibilities

• Lead engineering and design activities for substation and switchyard scopes in major transmission projects.
• Coordinate with internal teams and external consultants; interface with stakeholders.
• Define engineering scope, budget, schedule; align interfaces with other teams.
• Review detailed design submittals, calculations, and studies for safety and compliance.
• Provide engineering support to other disciplines during interconnection studies and commissioning readiness.
• Conduct site visits to assess location suitability and constructability.
• Engage with equipment suppliers for technical and commercial alignment.
• Stay informed on HVDC converter station and substation technologies.
• Prepare CAPEX estimates for facility equipment and installation.
• Support due diligence for early-stage development and potential acquisitions.
• Lead knowledge sharing and standardization across substation design practices.
